The Dude’s opinion is that the marriage of morality and profit is what has made America so successful, for so many years.  It’s a double positive feedback system.  Nothing can beat making lots of money and feeling really good about it!

The trouble is that we’ve lost our way and (apparently) need some help to find our way “back to the light”.  Thomas Friedman (The World is Flat dude) seems to agree.  He asserts what those of us with a brain already know.  He just articulates it better than most.  There is hope for the future, but not if we continue in denial.  We need to make our education system better.  We need to break our addiction to oil.  We need to be more responsible planetary stewards.  We need to want someone embarrassingly superior to ourselves to run our country, not the current “good ol’ boy” ignoramuses.  Most of all, we need to build a country our youth can believe in.  Apathy is the direct result of blatant stupidity and corruption, from those who should be so much better!

Can we do it?  I certainly hope so!  The Dude has 3 kids who seem willing to “carry the torch” for the next generation.  That’s why I’ll be voting for candidates that speak honestly about our current situation, and have realistic plans to address it.  Friedman seems to endorse Obama.  I’m not sure I support that view, or Obama, just yet.

If companies like eSolar and Makani Power carry through on their visions for the future, my faith in the U.S. will be restored.  If they’re held in check by “big power” company interests or the coal and oil industry lobbyists, we’re all in for a miserable future.
